ECHO/Page12 Section 1 ELY FEBRUARY23 2019 Porsche the Maltese and Cocker Spaniel with Ray and Scarlet Matsen: Ray: "1 finally got my Porsche. She's very silky. We call her a velvet spaniel, she's so soft." Scarlet: "We're from Hibbing. I'm a travel nurse and we're living up here just till the end of March. Work at the hospital in surgery." Ray: 'Tm a retired pastor. We LOVE ELY." Scarlet: "It's beautiful." Ray: "It's such a neat little town. We've been here since December. We really love all the little shops and restaurants." Scarlet: "1 can't believe how many people are here." Ray: "We were here during the festival and we had our six grandchildren with us the whole week and they thought it was just the best. It was so much fun." Scarlet: "Yes. It was real fun." Ray: "We want to come back and go fishing but we'll probably be in Florida." Scarlet: "Montana maybe." Ray: "Or San Diego. That's where we go. We go where we want." Scarlet: "We go where our kids and grandkids are, and family. And I get a job wherever I go." Ray: 'Usually we are in Southern California this time of year but we had some health issues and we got stuck at 38 below in Ely, Minnesota. In Florida it was 78 degrees." Scarlet: "We own a 37 foot motor home and that's what we live in except not in the winter time. We're living in an Airbnb over on Chapman Street." Ray: "It's real nice." Scarlet: "It's amazing, there's quite a few here in town." Ray: "Homes of people, resorts, cabins. So they're gone and they rent them out when they are gone. So we're staying just up here on Chapman behind the gas station and we're out for a Sunday walk." Scarlet: "1 love all the restaurants." Ray: "It's not the Iron Range. Don't' tell people. Iron Range'is the Iron Range. I was born and raised there. There's a stigma that goes with the Iron Range and that's NOT HERE. People are friendly here and it's great." Scarlet: "And artsy. It's so great." Ray: "It's so much fun." Scarlet: "We really enjoy it." Ray: "We're out for a walk." Scarlet. "Then we'll probably go to the Interview & photos by Pam Roberts Boat House and eat dinner." Ray: "It's a great place." Scarlet: "1 work as a surgical nurse at the hospital here." Ray: "Yep. Monday through Fridays." Scarlet: "We don't do a whole big assortment of surgeries here. We do a lot of hernias and endoscopies and a gall bladder and minor ortho stuff." Ray: "But when she's in southern California she does brain surgery. That's kind of like her specialty." Scarlet: "And spinal and total joints." Ray: "When we are in California, hospitals fight over her because she knows her stuff. She just walks in and runs the OR." Scarlet: "It's fun. There's a lot of nurses out there that do the traveling so it's great. It's nice that we are needed. I love the Ely Hospital. The people are incredible. I love who I work with. I love my work. I'm an old new nurse so I'm not ready to retire any time soon." Ray: "And I just follow. When we are in Florida I pastor a Jeremy and Brielle Laine: Jeremey: "1 have a good sport church and in California I do some concerts but here, just having fun. (Do they taste pretty good?) "Yeah. I think that they do." (Didn't you raise a bunch of money?) "Yes, I raised a lot of money for St. Jude's Hospital. We brought it down this last year to give the money to St. Jude's and now we're just thinking of other ways to help people. We thought of making some almost like gift baskets with blankets and long underwear and stuff like that for the homeless " Eddie Bravo: 'Tve been living here for almost 10 years. I work down at Razor Edge. My wife is making lunch. I just need to pick up a couple things at the store. I like that Ely is quiet and it's peaceful. I don't have to worry about people breaking into my house and stuff like that. It's a big change from northern California. My wife used to be a nanny and right now she got done with that and she kind of just stays at home and takes care of the house which is good. We just moved in from Idaho in September. I like to tell people I just move here for the weather. Everybody always laughs when I say that. Actually we moved over from Idaho and I've known people here for years that I've worked with in the past so we were looking around for a place to live and here we are. I worked for the Forest Service. I was retired for about 12 years. I was working mostly in fires so I'll continue to do that. I like the lakes and the friendliness of the people here. Those are the big things. I'm going to go home and kickback and enjoy the rest of the day, either read or watch a movie." i-i:~ Jacob Towley with his Saint Bernard dog Knuckles: "1 off my dad's boat.
