ELY
Author! Author! celebrates
writing and local authors
Ely Greenstone Public Art
will host Author! Author!, a
celebration of local writers,
on June 6 from 10 a.m. - 2
p.m. at the Miners Dry House
at 105 Miners Lake Landing
Road in Ely.
A free event, Author! Au-
thor! provides avenue for
Minnesota authors to discuss
writing and their books. The
event will feature compos-
er and performer Douglas
Wood, author of over thirty
books. This activity made
possible by the voters of
Minnesota through grants
from the Minnesota State
Arts Board and the Arrow-
head Regional Arts Council,
thanks to legislative appro-
priation from the arts and
cultural heritage fund.
Wood's performance will
include live music and stories
interspersed with dialogues
by local writers and publish-
ers who will share the stage
and talk about writing, their
lives, and their books and
projects. Local writers and
publishers participating in
the event include Becca Man-
love, Tim Munkeby, Nancy
Scheibe, Sarah Levar, Terri
Schocke, Timothy Goodwin,
Sarah Stonich, Bob Matson,
Daniel Rice, Polly Carlson-
Voiles, Ann Marie Mershon,
Bill Tefft, Beth Spring, Linda
Filonowich, David Kess, Ra-
ven Productions, and Listen-
ing Point Foundation.
The location is part of the
Ely Arts & Heritage Center
at Pioneer Mine which will
also be open during the time
frame.
Author! Author! will
complement the ceremony
celebrating Sigurd Olson
that will designate Vermilion
Community College as a
literary landmark on Friday,
June 5 at 4:00 p.m. in the
theater lobby at Vermilion
Community College.
Community calendar
Children can come dressed as their fa-
vorite Dr. Seuss book characters on May 23,
10-11:30 a.m., the Ely Rec Center, for ages
birth- Grade 3. Prizes! Sponsored by the Ely
Kids coalition, Northland Foundation and
Delta Dental. Every child in attendance will
go home with a brand new book! Suggested
donation of $2.
The Eagles Nest Seniors will hold their
first meeting of the new year on, Monday,
May 25, at 6.00 p.m. at the Town Hall. Host
are Deb Siverhus, Mary Lou Spaeth and A1
Cunningham. The Nesters will be there to
entertain. Remember to bring a pot luck
dish to share.
Ely Garden Club's Annual Pie and Plant
Social is May 30, 1-3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran
Church.
Ely Folk School, 209 E Sheridan, will
hold a June 6 Grand Opening event which
includes an open house with live music. The
school's first class takes place the following
day and additional classes are scheduled
every week through September. Categories
of class offerings inciude textile arts and
sewing, outdoor skills, food making, wood
crafts and folk music.
Legal Aid Senior Law Project, Ely Out-
reach, is making attorney Robin Raplinger
available to discuss legal questions with
Seniors (60yrs or over) Friday, June 12,
between 9 AM and 2 PM at the Government
Service Building, 320 Miners Dr., Ely con-
ference room "A". There is no charge. There
is no income or asset maximum or limits for
seniors. Walk-ins will be accepted, however
appointments are preferred. If you want to
set up an appointment or have other ques-

National Sauna
Day is June 6 in
Embarrass, MN
Sisu Heritage is holding a
simple, family-friendly event
to celebrate the sauna on Sat-
urday, June 6, from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. at the Nelimark Home-
stead in Embarrass. Food,
raffles, games for kids, and
sauna stories are all on the
agenda. There will be guided
bus tours of local Embarrass
saunas. Steve Tedman, of
Palo, will provide live accor-
dion music and Finnish songs
throughout the day.
In addition to hot dogs,
brats, all the fixings, drinks
and desserts, the Farmstead
Artisans will have pulla,
squeaky cheese, and coffee.
The gift shop will be open,
with some special sauna-
themed merchandise for sale.
Visit the museum's sauna
exhibit, two saunas, and other
log outbuildings right on the
Nelimark property.
Rain or shine, bring your
stories and come for some
sauna fun under the tents. The
Nelimark Homestead and
Museum is located on Hwy.
21 and Salo Rd., next to the
Fire Hall and across from the
Timber Hall.

Northwoods Partners plans dinner June 11
Northwoods Partners will hold its seventh
annual FUN-draising Dinner on June 11 with
the theme Celebrate the Holidays. It will be
held at Grand Ely Lodge with a social hour
and silent auction at 5:00 p.m. and dinner at
6:00 p.m.
Attendees will have plenty of time to buy
raffle tickets for a variety of theme baskets
filled with holiday items, gift certificates,
candy, beverages and much more! A silent
auction includes hotel stays, golf packages,
spa packages and gift certificates to many
local merchants and restaurants.
This year's event includes a new game
'Lucky Buck Auction' where your one dol-
lar bills can win you a variety of prizes. The
auctioneer will announce the item up for bid
and you can purchase a number/numbers
with your dollar bills. More numbers - more
chances to win!
Dressing up in your favorite holiday wear
is optional. Dinner tickets are $30 each with
ten dollars of the proceeds going to help
support Northwoods Partners programs and
services. Tickets are available by calling
at the NP office at 365-8019. Call soon as
remaining tickets are limited!
Attending is an excellent way to show
your support for Northwoods Partners
services in Ely and the surrounding com-
munities. Its mission is to provide support
services that enhance the quality of life for
individuals who are aged, chronically ill, or
disabled and for their families and caregiv-
ers. These services include transportation,
friendly visits, individual and group exercise
programs, memory care support groups in
Ely and Babbitt, and education, support
resources and referrals for caregivers and
their families. Your support is crucial if it is
to continue to successfully serve a growing
aging client base in the greater Ely area.
