Weather was lousy for ducks Saturday and Sunday-beautiful for wives who wanted to go for a Sunday drive. I had a guest up from the cities this last weekend for some duck hunting. Wolf Weber, my neighbor, Bob Grivette and yours truly, started the daq (Saturday) at the mouth of Burntside River on Shagawa, nothing! Next up the Echo Trail where we tried a few potholes, again nothing! In theearly P.M. we headed for Basswood, As we hit the Basswood side of Four Mile, a disgusted pair of duck hunters were heading home from Wind Bay- all they had were four Mallards for six hours effort. We went to Frog Bay, had pick a Black and some Mercies in about 45 minutes, then nothing, We were back in Ely at 5 p.m. and didn't bother going out Sunday. I hope for some duck weather next weekend or it's best to stay home. Pete Serson and Milt Laine didn't do any better towards Two Harbors Saturday but got a few Sunday on the Stony River. Ed Marsolek hasn't been heard from yet, but he's great on a duck call and I hope he does better than we did. His victorious warriors had wrapped up the St. Louis County Conference football title. The "Wild Bunch" had put on a show which the hometown partisans loved. Cook had a festive atmosphere. Students were happy. Proud parents re-played the game. The small community, 26 miles north of Virginia, was getting publicity all right. Newspapers in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Duluth, Virginia and Ely were following the progress of the Cook Little Gophers on the football field. It all happened last week, as the Little Gophers marched past their last stumbling block on the road to the county gridiron crown-the tenacious, fighting Tigers of Cherry. Last Wednesday afternoon, after the final gun had sounded, the rugged Little Gophers had subdued Cherry, 34-14. Now it was time to wait for an invitation from the Minnesota State High School League for post-season play in the second annual state prep nine-man football playdowns. Cook is idle this weekend, and Cherry has ended its season. Virginia sports writer Lee Bloomquist was impressed by the , Little Gophers. "Cherry was snowed under last Wednesday," he wrote, "Both literally and figuratively as Cook's Little Gophers knocked the Tigers from the unbeaten ranks with a convincing 34-14 victory." Cook won the St. Louis County Conference crown with a 6-0 record, and recorded a 7-0 perfect regular season mark. Cherry finished in second place in the conference with a 5-1 mark. Cherry was 6-1 overall. Cook quarterback Darrell Brodeen scored four times for the winners against Cherry on touchdowns runs of two, three, 26 and 52 yards--all on end sweeps. Brodeen's running handed the Tigers their first loss of the season in the regular season finale for both clubs. "In winning the game," Bloomquist noted, "Cook displayed a ball-control offense that held the ball much of the game on long drives from one end of the gridiron to the other." The 34-)4 Cook victory by the Hokka-men was achieved not only through the Little Gophers' potent offense, but also because Cook's famed Wild Bunch was once again on the prowl, outhitting a hard-hitting Cherry eleven. level loop pile rubber-back Store ilours 9:00 A.M, to 5:00 P.M. Gophers averaged 34.3 points a game during regular season P while they held their opponents to an average of just game.
